Eating like in the Stone Age - the Paleo or Primal diet

5 questions and answers about the Paleo diet

A diet like the hunter-gatherers. This is what lies behind the principle of the Paleo diet. But which foods are actually allowed and how does whey protein fit in? We answer 5 interesting questions about the Paleo diet!

What is meant by the Paleo diet?

The Paleo diet is a diet that was common in the Paleolithic era. For this reason it is also called the Stone Age diet and is based on the foods available at the time.

Are you wondering why? The Paleo diet assumes that the body has not changed since the Stone Age and that the original foods are particularly healthy.

But what foods are on the table now?

Everything that people hunted, fished, collected and picked in the Stone Age is served on the table. In the hunter-gatherer era, however, there was neither agriculture nor livestock breeding. For this reason, the Paleo diet excludes all industrially produced foods as well as dairy and grain products.

But food quality also plays a big role in the Paleo diet. Because here, particular emphasis is placed on organic products and high-quality meat.

Allowed foods:

  • Vegetables and fruits (except nightshades)
  • Potatoes and rice in small quantities
  • meat and fish
  • Eggs
  • Nuts and seeds
  • honey and maple syrup
  • Healthy fats

Forbidden foods:

  • Cereals and grain products
  • Legumes, soy products and peanuts
  • milk and milkproducts
  • sweets and sugar
  • Artificial additives
  • Alcohol, coffee and soft drinks
  • Processed foods

What is the difference between Paleo and Primal?

The principle of the primal diet is also based on eating natural foods like in the Stone Age. The rule is that what can be eaten raw should also be consumed raw. The Primal Diet also allows almost no industrially processed foods or grain products purchased from agriculture.

But what is the difference to Paleo? Dairy products are allowed at Primal, but only from the most natural farming possible, i.e. pasture-raised. Even with organic milk, at least in Germany, a large proportion of concentrated feed such as grain is fed. Read more about this in the blog article " Which is better: organic or pasture milk? "

Nightshade plants such as potatoes and tomatoes can also be consumed as desired with this diet.

Can the Primal diet be supported with whey protein?

Many people don't want to go without whey protein during their primal diet. And here too you will find a range of so-called Primal Whey on the market that you can safely consume during your Primal diet. With Primal whey protein, the focus is also on quality. This should be free of unnecessary additives and sweeteners.

Which Primal Wheys can I take?

Protero Willow Whey

The milk in our pasture whey protein comes from pasture-raised Irish cows. Since Ireland has a full pasture system, you can be absolutely sure that the cows have a species-appropriate life in the fresh air. During the short winter stable season we avoid purchasing milk, so that our Protero Weide Whey meets the highest requirements of the Primal diet.

Protero Kefir Whey

If you have tried a dairy-free Paleo diet and don't want to do without milk, you can make a compromise with kefir whey. Thanks to the ancient fermentation technique, kefir whey is particularly rich in protein and is already “pre-digested”. Anthropologists assume that people in pre-civilization tribes fermented food and that the first domestication of animals among migratory peoples took place long before agriculture.
